Wechat was already pretty intergrated into Chinese life but the pace at which digital payments took over is truly incredible. From an outside perspective, where change is slower, it seems dizzying, from an inside perspective, when you are living there, it is just the way it is. The new is balanced by the old; plenty of old traditions, and some old buildings, remain.
Wonderful and fascinating post! Great lineup of writers too. I appreciate the contrast from skyscrapers, smartphones to the soul. Makes me shiver thinking how prevalent similar change in culture is happening across Asia, at the expense of consumption and being consumed. It's important to document this shift.
We have to keep understanding the changes otherwise we get engulfed in them. I was interested in having different perspectives in this, and found it interesting how all the collaborators had similar themes running through their pieces.
i found it interesting too. different perspectives, similar themes. change happens so quick in China, breathe and you miss it! Look forward to your tales on returning, in the meantime, enjoy!!
That was outstanding, thank you to all of you, and especially Debbie for the concept! ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
Wonderful to get all these different perspectives -- a bit scary that you can't ride a train without WePay! The pace of change must be dizzying.
